Bullying

What is bullying?

Bullying at school is when another person, or group of people, behaves in a way that is cruel or hurtful to you. This includes someone being physically violent, making threats or harassing you. Harassment means ongoing verbal or physical attacks against you.
Bullying includes things like:

teasing
calling you names
saying things to put you down or make fun of or humiliate you
unwanted touching or kissing
excluding you from groups or activities
making nasty comments because of your race or your sex or your sexuality
pushing or hitting you or being violent in some other way
making threats, obscene gestures or saying things that make you or others scared
forcing you to do silly or dangerous things
damaging, hiding or breaking your things
demanding money or food or other items
belittling your abilities and achievements
writing mean or spiteful notes or graffiti about you or others
making fun of how you look

Bullying can happen in the playground, in the toilets, going to and from school or in the classroom.

NCYLC and Mallesons nominated for Award

NCYLC and the national law firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques were recently nominated for the Pro Bono Partnership Award at the Law and Justice Foundation of New South Wales’ 2011 Justice Awards.

In presenting the award, won by Women's Legal Services NSW, Blake Dawson, Clayton Utz, Freehills, NSW Bar Association and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for their work bringing about positive change for victims of sexual assault, Mr John Corker, Director of the National Pro Bono Resource Centre said of the NCYLC/Mallesons partnership:

“The Centre and Mallesons have worked collaboratively for over 10 years together, providing young people with legal assistance through Lawmail and the Lawstuff website and this partnership was recognised as the 2005 winner of this Award. In 2007 this partnership created the Cyber Project which has facilitated the growth of this service by making it easy for Cyber Volunteers (including in-house corporate lawyers) to provide Lawmail advice”.

“To the year ended 30 June 2011 834 written advices, Lawmails, were provided. More than 90 Mallesons lawyers are Cyber Volunteers, and they used the online environment innovatively to provide high quality legal assistance to young people”.

Open letter to Minister Garrett calls for youth participation in education funding review

The National Children's and Youth Law Centre (NCYLC) has written an open letter to the Federal Minister for Education, the Hon. Peter Garrett, MP.

In the letter, NCYLC are critical of the lack of effort made by the Review of Funding for Schooling panel to seek the views of the students of Australia’s schools. NCYLC seeks the Minister’s assurance that he or his Department will actively seek to obtain the views of the nation's students prior to finalising the Federal Government's policy on school funding.
