Welcome to Lawmail!

***Please note that it may take us up to 2 weeks to reply to your question during the holidays if your question is not urgent.***

Lawmail is a FREE legal service for Australian children and young people (and their advocates), providing legal information, advice and referrals by email.

We do NOT help adults with their own questions or students with assignments.

Everything you tell us is CONFIDENTIAL. We are not allowed to tell anyone or use your information in any way without your permission. If you would like to talk to us first, you can call us on 02 9385 9588 (Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm AET).

What is your full name?
We have to enter a first and last name into our confidential client records. That way, we can keep track of your matter in case you contact us again. We can also make sure that we don't advise anyone else who contacts us and lists you as the 'other party' to their problem.
Date of birth?

***If you are over 25, we CANNOT help you unless you are asking a question about a child under 18.***

We need to know your birthday because the law can be different depending on your age.
Are you Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?
No   Yes
This information helps us to provide better advice or referrals to other organisations that can help. It also helps us when we gather our statistics.
Gender?
This information helps us to provide better advice or referrals to other organisations that can help. It also helps us when we gather our statistics.
What are the full names of all of the other people or organisations involved?
For example, your parent, school, teacher, friend, etc. We need to know the full names of anyone else involved to make sure that none of them have sent us an email as well. We are only allowed to advise one person in a legal issue. If you don't provide their names, we can only give you general legal information and not specific advice.
Postcode?
Thisinformation helps us find organisations near you that can help (for example, local legal aid offices, counselling services, courts, etc.)
State or Territory of Australia?

***IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE AUSTRALIA, WE CANNOT HELP YOU.***

The laws are different in each state and territory.

What is your email address?

We need your email address so we can send you the answer to your question. Otherwise we have no way of sending your answer back to you! Please note that most schools monitor student email accounts, so it's best if you can give us a personal email address instead of a school email address. If you don't have a secure email address or you're scared that someone might be able to see our answer, then include a safe phone number below and we can call you!

Confirm your email address:

What is your question?
Please give as much information and detail as you can about your question. This will let us give you the most accurate and specific advice possible. For example, if your question is about school, we need to know if it's a public or private school. If your question is about changing your living arrangements, we need to know if there are any court orders in place, what they say, and when they were made. This will let us give you the most accurate and specific advice possible. If you have a private mobile phone number, please include it so we can contact you if we have any problems reaching you by email.

*VERY IMPORTANT: After you send your Lawmail, you will receive a confirmation of receipt email from us by the next business day. If you do not receive this email, PLEASE CHECK YOUR SPAM BOX. If our confirmation message is there, PLEASE REMOVE IT FROM SPAM AND ADD US TO YOUR EMAIL CONTACTS. If you have not received any confirmation, then we have not received your Lawmail - you need to write to us again.*
