PROTECTING YOUR PRIVACY

If you are worried about being forced to marry and are looking for information and help online, it is important that you do not use a computer that anyone involved in forcing you to marry has access to. Try to use a computer in a library, at school or at a friend’s house.

If you do use a computer that someone who could be involved in forcing you to marry might also use, it is very important that you delete as many traces of your computer searches from that computer as possible.

To do this, you will need to:

How you delete this information differs slightly depending on what internet browser you are using. Most browsers have a short cut for deleting your internet history that is ctrl+shift+delete.

If you are using Internet Explorer:

  • Select the Tools menu
  • Select Internet Options
  • On the General page, under Temporary Internet Files , click on "Delete Files"
  • Under History click on "Clear History"

Google Chrome:

Mozilla Firefox:

Safari (Mac)

iPhone (note also how to clear phone call records)

iPad

If you are not using this browser or for more detailed information on how to delete your internet history, see the guide by the Forced MarriageProject http://www.forcedmarriages.ca/cover-your-tracks/ (Californian page)

Please remember that even if you delete the call history, these calls will still show up on your bill (if you aren’t on prepaid).

The Australian Government’s Forced Marriage Saftey Plan can further help you ensure that you are safe while looking for information and help. http://www.ag.gov.au/CrimeAndCorruption/HumanTrafficking/Documents/ForcedMarriageSafetyPlan.pdf

Remember that doing these steps may not completely hide all of your internet activity. The safest way to find information on the internet is to use a computer in a library, at school or at a friend’s house.
