If you do not pay your mobile phone bill within 60 days of the due date, and you have not called the phone company to make an arrangement to pay it off, the phone company may start to pressure you to pay off the debt.
What is debt?
Debt is the money one person owes to another.
A debtor is the person who legally owes the money, or has agreed to pay money.
A creditor is the person or company who the money is owed to.
By signing up to a phone contract, you agree to pay the phone company money every month. In exchange, the company agrees to provide you with the phone and service. This makes you the debtor, and the phone company the creditor. If you do not pay your phone bill, then you are in debt to the phone company.
You will also become the debtor if you sign up for a phone for someone else, such as friend or someone in your family. Because you signed the contract, the company will see you as the person who owes the money, even if you’re the one not using the phone.
Did you know...?
The phone company can't ask you to pay a debt or bill if you made a complaint about the bill and the complaint hasn't been resolved.
See our page on Debt Collectors for more information on what they can and can't do.
